Paper-Less day past achievements
Although the Paperless Day campaign has been in action for
only 3 years, it has in such a short span of time set in
motion an important approach towards paper consumption within Abu
Dhabi and envisions the same for the UAE this year.
Paperless Day 2010
In 2010, the Paperless Day campaign went from strength to
strength and over 127,000 participants from 219 organisations and
communities went paperless on June 5, from all over the UAE and
globally.
In fact this simple idea was so powerful and engaging that
we witnessed its adoption beyond our borders and Paperless Day was
adopted in the USA, South Africa, India and Germany.
The CO2 emissions were reduced by 4290kg, a huge increase
from 2009.
Paperless Day 2009
In 2009 EAD led the way along with 12 organizations from Abu
Dhabi Emirate to commemorate the World Environment Day 2009 on June
04th and Unite to Combat Climate Change by observing a paperless
day.
All the non-essential printing of paper in these organizations
ceased. With only the most necessary external communication printed
out, these organizations vowed to reduce their carbon footprint
from their offices The organizations who participated were ADGAS,
GASCO, MASDAR , ALDAR, SHELL, BP, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority
(ADFCA), Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Department of Transport
(DoT), Urban Planning Council (UPC), Standard Chartered, Abu Dhabi
Family Foundation.
Together they managed to save 1.8 trees and CO2 emissions
reductions were 153.61 kg. If such an initiative is implemented for
the whole year, then the trees saved annually would be 671. The
total CO2 emission reduced would be 56 tons of CO2.
It was heartening to see that maximum gains were made in paper
saving by each organization. Based on the statistics given out by
10 out of the 12 organizations, nearly 81% reduction is paper use
was made during the paper less day.

Paperless Day 2008 with ADGAS
The first Paperless Day campaign with ADGAS on June 5th and 1.5
trees was saved. The Campaign and a continuous surge within the
organizations to reduce paper usage resulted in a reduction of
paper wastes by 2.47 tons or 31.24% from 7.927 tons in 2007 to 5.45
tons in 2008. This reduction amounts to saving 50 trees in a
year.
(1 ton paper is equivalent to 20 trees, source: US
data).
